2 Thessalonians 1
The full text of 2 Thessalonians 1 in the Trinity Bible Version — clear modern English, translated from the original Greek. Free to read.
1 Paul, Silas, and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:
2 Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing.
4 As a result, we ourselves boast about you among God's churches—about your endurance and faith in all the persecutions and afflictions you are enduring.
5 This is evidence of God's righteous judgment, that you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering.
6 Since it is just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you,
7 and to give relief to you who are afflicted, and to us as well, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his powerful angels
8 in blazing fire, dealing out punishment to those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
9 They will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,
10 on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy ones and marveled at among all who have believed—because you believed our testimony to you.
11 With this in mind, we always pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling and, by his power, bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith.
12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Translation notes (8)
- 2 Thessalonians 1:1a The Greek name 'Silouanos' refers to Silvanus, who is the same person called Silas elsewhere in the Bible.
- 2 Thessalonians 1:3a The Greek word 'hyperauxanei,' translated as 'growing more and more,' is an emphatic compound word meaning to grow abundantly, beyond the ordinary.
- 2 Thessalonians 1:5a The Greek word 'endeigma,' which opens this verse, is a compressed expression that points either to their endurance or to the entire situation as proof that God's judgment is just.
- 2 Thessalonians 1:7a The Greek phrase 'angelon dynameos autou,' translated as 'his powerful angels,' literally means 'angels of his power.' This may describe the angels as mighty, or as belonging to his power.
- 2 Thessalonians 1:9a The Greek phrase 'apo prosopou,' translated as 'shut out from,' literally means 'away from the face/presence of.' This could mean exclusion from the Lord's presence, or destruction coming from his presence, as the Greek word 'apo' allows for both interpretations.
- 2 Thessalonians 1:10a The Greek phrase 'en tois hagiois autou,' translated as 'in his holy ones,' likely means he is glorified in or among his people. The parenthetical clause about believing was originally part of a long sentence and is placed at the end here for clarity.
- 2 Thessalonians 1:11a The Greek phrase 'pasan eudokian agathosynes,' translated as 'your every desire for goodness,' could mean your good resolve, or God's good pleasure to do good in you, because the Greek grammatical case (genitive) allows for both interpretations. The phrase 'deed prompted by faith' translates 'ergon pisteos.'
- 2 Thessalonians 1:12a The closing phrase can be read in two ways: 'our God and the Lord Jesus Christ' (referring to two persons) or 'our God and Lord, Jesus Christ' (referring to one person). Greek grammar allows for both interpretations, and the ambiguity is preserved in the translation.
