1 He said to me, "Son of man, stand on your feet, and I will speak with you."
2 As he spoke to me, a spirit entered me and set me on my feet, and I heard the one speaking to me.
3 He said to me, "Son of man, I am sending you to the sons of Israel, to rebellious nations who have rebelled against me. They and their ancestors have transgressed against me to this very day.
4 The descendants are hard of face and stubborn of heart. I am sending you to them, and you shall say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD.'"
5 Whether they listen or refuse—for they are a rebellious house—they will know that a prophet has been among them.
6 As for you, son of man, do not be afraid of them, and do not be afraid of their words—though briers and thorns are with you and you sit among scorpions. Do not be afraid of their words, and do not be dismayed at their faces, for they are a rebellious house.
7 You shall speak my words to them, whether they listen or refuse, for they are rebellious.
8 But you, son of man, hear what I am saying to you. Do not be rebellious like that rebellious house. Open your mouth and eat what I am giving you."
9 I looked, and there—a hand stretched out toward me, and in it was a written scroll.
10 He spread it before me, and it was written on the front and back. Written on it were laments, mourning, and woe.
Translation notes (9)
- Ezekiel 2:1a The Hebrew phrase ben-adam literally means "son of humanity/adam," a term emphasizing mortal humanness.
- Ezekiel 2:2a The Hebrew word ruah means "spirit" or "wind"; because it does not have the word "the" before it, it could possibly mean "a spirit" rather than "the Spirit."
- Ezekiel 2:3a The Hebrew phrase goyim hammoredim means 'rebellious nations' (plural), which is an unusual description if it refers to Israel alone.
- Ezekiel 2:4a The Hebrew phrase qeshei-fanim ve-hizqei-lev means 'hard or stiff of face and strong or hard of heart'.
- Ezekiel 2:4b The Hebrew phrase Adonai YHWH means 'Lord GOD'; this double divine name is used throughout the book of Ezekiel.
- Ezekiel 2:6a The Hebrew words sallonim ve-sillionim are a wordplay on thorny plants, though the exact species is uncertain.
- Ezekiel 2:9a The Hebrew phrase megillat-sefer means 'scroll of a document or book'.
- Ezekiel 2:10a The Hebrew words qinim vahegeh vahi are three terms for grief, possibly used as a wordplay.
- Ezekiel 2:10b The fact that the scroll was written on both sides indicates an unusually full message, as scrolls were normally written on only one side.
