1 The word of the LORD came to me:
2 "Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre:
Thus says the Lord GOD:
Because your heart is proud
and you have said, "I am a god;
I sit in the seat of gods
in the heart of the seas"—
yet you are a man and not a god,
though you set your heart
as the heart of a god—
3 yes, you are wiser than Daniel!
No secret is hidden from you!
4 By your wisdom and understanding
you have gained wealth for yourself
and gathered gold and silver
into your treasuries.
5 By your great skill in trade
you have increased your wealth,
and your heart has grown proud
because of your wealth—
6 therefore thus says the Lord GOD:
Because you have set your heart
as the heart of a god,
7 therefore I am about to bring foreigners against you,
the most ruthless of nations.
They will draw their swords
against the beauty of your wisdom
and defile your splendor.
8 They will bring you down to the Pit,
and you will die the death of the slain
in the heart of the seas.
9 Will you still say "I am a god"
before the one who kills you?
You are a man and not a god
in the hand of the one who slays you.
10 You will die the death of the uncircumcised
at the hands of foreigners.
For I have spoken—
declares the Lord GOD.
11 The word of the LORD came to me:
12 "Son of man, raise a lament over the king of Tyre and say to him:
Thus says the Lord GOD:
You were the seal of perfection,
full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in Eden, the garden of God.
Every precious stone was your covering:
carnelian, topaz, and diamond,
beryl, onyx, and jasper,
sapphire, turquoise, and emerald,
with gold.
The workmanship of your settings and mountings
was prepared in you on the day you were created.
14 You were an anointed guardian cherub;
I placed you there.
You were on the holy mountain of God;
you walked among the stones of fire.
15 You were blameless in your ways
from the day you were created
until wickedness was found in you.
16 Through your abundant trade
you were filled with violence,
and you sinned.
So I cast you as profane
from the mountain of God,
and I destroyed you, guardian cherub,
from among the stones of fire.
17 Your heart was proud because of your beauty;
you corrupted your wisdom
on account of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground;
I placed you before kings
for them to gaze at you.
18 By the multitude of your iniquities,
through the injustice of your trade,
you profaned your sanctuaries.
So I brought fire out from within you;
it consumed you.
I reduced you to ashes on the ground
in the eyes of all who saw you.
19 All who knew you among the peoples
are appalled at you.
You have become a horror
and will be no more, forever.
20 The word of the LORD came to me:
21 "Son of man, set your face toward Sidon
and prophesy against her."
22 Say: Thus says the Lord GOD:
I am against you, Sidon,
and I will gain glory in your midst.
Then they will know that I am the LORD
when I execute judgments in her
and manifest my holiness in her.
23 I will send a plague against her
and blood in her streets.
The slain will fall in her midst
by the sword against her on every side.
Then they will know that I am the LORD.
24 Then there will no longer be
a pricking brier or a painful thorn
for the house of Israel
from any of those around them
who treat them with contempt.
Then they will know that I am the Lord GOD.
25 Thus says the Lord GOD:
When I gather the house of Israel
from the peoples among whom they are scattered,
I will manifest my holiness through them
in the sight of the nations.
Then they will dwell in their land
that I gave to my servant Jacob.
26 They will dwell there in security.
They will build houses and plant vineyards;
they will dwell in security
when I execute judgments
on all those around them who treat them with contempt.
Then they will know that I am the LORD their God.
Translation notes (5)
- Ezekiel 28:2a The Hebrew word nagid means 'ruler' or 'prince,' and is distinct from melek, which means 'king' (used in verse 12).
- Ezekiel 28:3a The Hebrew word is Daniel (dani'el). This might refer to the ancient sage Dan'el, known from Ugaritic texts, rather than the biblical figure Daniel.
- Ezekiel 28:12a The Hebrew phrase chotem toknit literally means 'seal/signet of proportion/perfection.' This is a highly debated phrase.
- Ezekiel 28:13a The nine stones listed here correspond to nine of the twelve stones on the high priest's breastpiece (Exod 28:17-20). LXX adds three more to complete twelve.
- Ezekiel 28:14a This can also be translated as 'With an anointed guardian cherub I placed you.' The Hebrew grammar is unclear about who the cherub refers to.
