1 The word of the LORD came to me:
2 "Son of man, set your face toward the mountains of Israel and prophesy against them.
3 Say: Mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD!
Thus says the Lord GOD to the mountains and to the hills,
to the ravines and to the valleys:
I myself am bringing a sword against you,
and I will destroy your high places.
4 Your altars will be desolated,
and your incense stands will be shattered.
I will cast down your slain before your idols.
5 I will lay the corpses of the sons of Israel before their idols, and I will scatter your bones around your altars.
6 In all your dwelling places the cities will be laid waste and the high places will be desolated, so that your altars will be laid waste and bear their guilt, your idols will be shattered and cease, your incense stands will be cut down, and your works will be wiped out.
7 The slain will fall in your midst,
and you will know that I am the LORD.
8 Yet I will leave a remnant—some of you who escape the sword among the nations, when you are scattered through the countries.
9 Your survivors will remember me among the nations where they are carried captive—how I was broken by their adulterous heart that turned from me, and by their eyes that went whoring after their idols. They will loathe themselves for the evils they have done, for all their abominations.
10 They will know that I am the LORD. I did not speak in vain about bringing this disaster upon them.
11 Thus says the Lord GOD: Strike with your hand and stamp with your foot and say, "Ah!" over all the evil abominations of the house of Israel, who will fall by sword, famine, and plague.
12 The one far off will die by plague,
the one near will fall by the sword,
and the one who remains and is besieged will die by famine.
I will spend my fury against them.
13 You will know that I am the LORD—when their slain lie among their idols, around their altars, on every high hill, on all the mountain tops, under every green tree, under every leafy oak—every place where they offered pleasing aroma to all their idols.
14 I will stretch out my hand against them and make the land a desolation and waste, from the wilderness to Diblah, in all their dwelling places. Then they will know that I am the LORD."
Translation notes (11)
- Ezekiel 6:3a The Hebrew word bamot means 'high places', referring to cultic platforms used for worship, which often combined different religious practices.
- Ezekiel 6:4a The Hebrew word hammanim refers to 'incense altars' or 'sun-pillars', though their exact nature is debated.
- Ezekiel 6:4b The Hebrew word gillulim means 'idols'; it is a pejorative term related to gelel, meaning 'dung'.
- Ezekiel 6:6a The Hebrew word ye'shemu can mean both 'bear guilt' and 'be desolate', creating a wordplay on both senses.
- Ezekiel 6:8a This is the first hint of hope in the judgment oracles, indicating that a remnant survives.
- Ezekiel 6:9a The Hebrew word nishbarti means 'I was broken' or 'grieved', portraying God as a wounded party. Some scholars suggest emending the text to nishbar, meaning 'was broken'.
- Ezekiel 6:9b The Hebrew word hazzoneh means 'the whoring one', used as a sexual metaphor for idolatry.
- Ezekiel 6:10a The Hebrew phrase lo el-hinnam means 'not for nothing' or 'not in vain'.
- Ezekiel 6:11a The Hebrew phrase hakh be-khappekha u-reqa be-raglekha describes gestures of grief or scorn.
- Ezekiel 6:13a The Hebrew phrase reah nihoah means 'pleasing aroma'; this is a cultic term usually reserved for offerings made to YHWH.
- Ezekiel 6:14a The Hebrew word is "Diblah," but this may possibly refer to Riblah in Syria. This confusion is common in Hebrew script due to the similarity between the letters dalet and resh.
