Galatians 6
The full text of Galatians 6 in the Trinity Bible Version — clear modern English, translated from the original Greek. Free to read.
1 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in any wrongdoing, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted.
2 Carry one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
3 If anyone thinks they are something when they are nothing, they deceive themselves.
4 Each one should test their own work. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else,
5 for each one will carry their own load.
6 The one who is taught the word should share all good things with the one who teaches.
7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked. A person reaps what they sow.
8 Whoever sows to please their own flesh will reap destruction from the flesh; but whoever sows to please the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit.
9 Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who belong to the family of faith.
11 See what large letters I am using to write to you with my own hand!
12 Those who want to make a good impression outwardly are the ones trying to compel you to be circumcised. Their only motive is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ.
13 Not even those who are circumcised keep the law themselves; yet they want you to be circumcised so that they can boast about your flesh.
14 But may I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
15 For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation.
16 Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule—and to the Israel of God.
17 From now on, let no one cause me trouble, for I carry on my body the marks of Jesus.
18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen.
Translation notes (7)
- Galatians 6:1a The Greek word adelphoi means 'brothers,' but here it includes all believers, both men and women. The Greek phrase 'you who are spiritual' refers to those who are led by the Spirit (see 5:25).
- Galatians 6:5a The Greek word phortion, used here, means a person's own pack or load, and it is different from the Greek word bare, meaning crushing burdens, used in 6:2. While we share each other's crushing burdens, each person still carries their own proper load before God.
- Galatians 6:8a The Greek word sarx is translated 'flesh.' For more explanation, see the note at 5:16.
- Galatians 6:12a The Greek phrase 'to make a good showing in the flesh' means to make an outward, surface impression.
- Galatians 6:16a This can also be translated, 'Or peace and mercy to all who follow this rule, that is, to the Israel of God.' The Greek connector kai can be understood in two ways: as additive, meaning 'and also to the Israel of God' (referring to a distinct group), or as explanatory, meaning 'that is, the Israel of God' (identifying the rule-followers as God's true Israel). This choice has significant theological weight and is disputed among scholars.
- Galatians 6:17a The Greek word stigmata refers to brands or marks, like those burned on a slave to show who owned him. Paul's scars from his sufferings show that he belongs to Jesus.
- Galatians 6:18a The Greek word *adelphoi* here includes all the believers, both men and women.
