Hosea 1
The full text of Hosea 1 in the Trinity Bible Version — clear modern English, translated from the original Hebrew. Free to read.
1 The word of the LORD that came to Hosea son of Beeri,
in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah,
and in the days of Jeroboam son of Joash, king of Israel.
2 When the LORD first spoke through Hosea,
the LORD said to Hosea:
"Go, take for yourself a wife of promiscuity
and children of promiscuity,
for the land is utterly promiscuous,
turning from the LORD."
3 So he went and took Gomer daughter of Diblaim,
and she conceived and bore him a son.
4 And the LORD said to him:
"Call his name Jezreel,
for in a little while I will bring account
for the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu,
and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel."
5 "And on that day
I will break the bow of Israel
in the Valley of Jezreel."
6 She conceived again and bore a daughter,
and he said to him: "Call her name Lo-ruhamah,
for I will no longer have compassion on the house of Israel,
or ever forgive them."
7 "But on the house of Judah I will have compassion,
and I will save them by the LORD their God.
I will not save them by bow or by sword,
by battle, by horses, or by horsemen."
8 When she had weaned Lo-ruhamah,
she conceived and bore a son.
9 And he said: "Call his name Lo-ammi,
for you are not my people,
and I am not 'I Am' to you."
10 Yet the number of the children of Israel will be
like the sand of the sea,
which cannot be measured or counted.
And in the place where it was said to them,
"You are not my people,"
it will be said to them,
"Children of the living God."
11 The children of Judah and the children of Israel
will be gathered together,
and they will appoint for themselves one head,
and they will go up from the land,
for great is the day of Jezreel.
Translation notes (10)
- Hosea 1:2a The Hebrew phrase ʾēšet zənûnîm, meaning 'woman of promiscuities,' is deliberately ambiguous in the Hebrew text regarding whether Gomer was already promiscuous or would become so.
- Hosea 1:4a The Hebrew word pāqad, meaning 'visit,' 'attend to,' or 'bring account,' carries the sense of both judgment and attention.
- Hosea 1:6a The Hebrew phrase lōʾ ruḥāmāh means 'not shown compassion' or 'not pitied.'
- Hosea 1:6b The Hebrew phrase nāśāʾ ʾeśśāʾ lāhem, literally meaning 'lifting I will lift for them,' has a debated meaning, possibly 'forgive' or 'carry away.'
- Hosea 1:7a This verse is considered by many scholars to be a later Judean addition.
- Hosea 1:9a The Hebrew phrase lōʾ ʿammî means 'not my people.'
- Hosea 1:9b Heb. wəʾānōkî lōʾ-ʾehyeh lākem, lit. 'and I [am] not I-Am to you' — echoes Exod 3:14, reversing the covenant name.
- Hosea 1:10a This verse is numbered 2:1 in the standard Hebrew text. The English Bible's numbering follows the tradition of the Septuagint, the ancient Greek translation of the Old Testament.
- Hosea 1:11a This verse is numbered 2:2 in the standard Hebrew text.
- Hosea 1:11b The name 'Jezreel' now carries its positive meaning, 'God sows,' which is a reversal of its earlier negative sense in verses 1:4-5.
