1 The LORD called to Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting. He said:
2 "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: When any of you brings an offering to the LORD, you are to bring as your offering an animal from the herd or the flock.
3 "If the offering is a burnt offering from the herd, you are to present a male without defect. You must present it at the entrance to the tent of meeting so that it will be accepted on your behalf before the LORD.
4 You are to lay your hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on your behalf to make atonement for you.
5 You are to slaughter the young bull before the LORD, and then Aaron's sons the priests shall bring the blood and splash it against the sides of the altar at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
6 You are to skin the burnt offering and cut it into pieces.
7 The sons of Aaron the priest are to put fire on the altar and arrange wood on the fire.
8 Then Aaron's sons the priests shall arrange the pieces, including the head and the fat, on the wood that is on the fire on the altar.
9 The internal organs and the legs are to be washed with water, and the priest is to burn all of it on the altar. It is a burnt offering, a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the LORD.
10 "If the offering is a burnt offering from the flock, from either the sheep or the goats, you are to present a male without defect.
11 You are to slaughter it on the north side of the altar before the LORD, and Aaron's sons the priests shall splash its blood against the sides of the altar.
12 You are to cut it into pieces, and the priest shall arrange them, including the head and the fat, on the wood that is on the fire on the altar.
13 The internal organs and the legs are to be washed with water, and the priest is to bring all of it and burn it on the altar. It is a burnt offering, a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the LORD.
14 "If the offering to the LORD is a burnt offering of birds, you are to present a turtledove or a young pigeon as your offering.
15 The priest shall bring it to the altar, wring off its head, and burn it on the altar; its blood is to be drained out against the side of the altar.
16 He is to remove the crop and its contents and throw it to the east side of the altar, where the ashes are.
17 He shall tear it open by its wings without dividing it completely, and then the priest shall burn it on the wood that is on the fire on the altar. It is a burnt offering, a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the LORD.
Translation notes (6)
- Leviticus 1:1a The Hebrew term 'ohel mo'ed, translated as "Tent of meeting," refers to the portable sanctuary where the LORD met with Israel. This term is translated consistently throughout the text.
- Leviticus 1:2a The Hebrew word qorban, translated as "Offering," is a general term for something brought near to the LORD. Here, "livestock" includes both cattle from a herd and sheep or goats from a flock.
- Leviticus 1:3a The Hebrew word 'olah, translated as "Burnt offering," literally means "that which goes up" and refers to a sacrifice entirely consumed on the altar. This term is translated consistently throughout the book of Leviticus.
- Leviticus 1:4a The Hebrew word kipper, translated as "Make atonement," conveys the sense of wiping clean, ransoming, or covering. The exact shade of meaning is debated among scholars and is left open here. This term is translated consistently throughout the book of Leviticus.
- Leviticus 1:9a The Hebrew word 'isheh, translated as "Food offering," is traditionally understood as "offering made by fire," but it likely refers to a gift of food presented to the LORD. The phrase "An aroma pleasing to the LORD" translates the Hebrew reach nichoach, which is a fixed phrase used in worship and is rendered consistently.
- Leviticus 1:16a The Hebrew phrase translated as "The crop and its contents" is uncertain, literally meaning "its crop with its feathers" (or possibly "its filth"). The overall sense refers to the disposal of the bird's digestive sac.
