1 Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the LORD had appeared to his father David, at the place David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
2 He began to build on the second day of the second month in the fourth year of his reign.
3 These are Solomon's foundations for building the house of God: the length, by the old standard of measurement, was sixty cubits, and the width was twenty cubits.
4 The portico at the front of the house was twenty cubits long across the width of the house, and its height was a hundred and twenty cubits. He overlaid the inside with pure gold.
5 The main hall he paneled with cypress wood, overlaid it with fine gold, and decorated it with palm trees and chains.
6 He adorned the house with precious stones for beauty, and the gold was gold from Parvaim.
7 He overlaid the house—the beams, the thresholds, its walls, and its doors—with gold, and he carved cherubim on the walls.
8 He made the most holy place. Its length corresponded to the width of the house—twenty cubits—and its width was also twenty cubits. He overlaid it with six hundred talents of fine gold.
9 The weight of the gold nails was fifty shekels. He also overlaid the upper rooms with gold.
10 In the most holy place he made two cherubim of sculptured work and overlaid them with gold.
11 The wings of the cherubim together extended twenty cubits: one wing of the first cherub was five cubits long, touching the wall of the house, and its other wing was five cubits long, touching the wing of the other cherub.
12 Likewise, one wing of the second cherub was five cubits long, touching the other wall of the house, and its other wing was five cubits long, joining the wing of the first cherub.
13 The wings of these cherubim extended twenty cubits. They stood on their feet, facing the main hall.
14 He made the curtain of blue, purple, and crimson yarn and fine linen, and he worked cherubim into it.
15 In front of the house he made two pillars thirty-five cubits high, and the capital on top of each was five cubits.
16 He made chains in the inner sanctuary and put them on top of the pillars. He also made a hundred pomegranates and attached them to the chains.
17 He set up the pillars in front of the temple, one on the right and one on the left. He named the one on the right Jakin and the one on the left Boaz.
Translation notes (8)
- 2 Chronicles 3:1a The only other reference to Moriah in the Bible is in Genesis 22:2, where Abraham was commanded to sacrifice Isaac.
- 2 Chronicles 3:3a By the old standard, a cubit was about 21 inches (52.5 cm); therefore, sixty cubits equals about 105 feet (32 m).
- 2 Chronicles 3:4a The measurement of 120 cubits (about 210 feet or 64 m) may be a textual error; the Septuagint, the ancient Greek translation of the Old Testament, reads 20 cubits, which matches 1 Kings 6:3.
- 2 Chronicles 3:6a Parvaim is a location that has not been identified, possibly in Arabia or India.
- 2 Chronicles 3:8a This refers to about 23 tons (21 metric tons) of gold.
- 2 Chronicles 3:9a This refers to about 1.25 pounds (0.6 kg) of gold.
- 2 Chronicles 3:15a 1 Kings 7:15 gives the height as 18 cubits each; 35 may be the combined total with some rounding.
- 2 Chronicles 3:17a The name Jakin probably means 'he establishes,' and Boaz probably means 'in him is strength.'
