1 King Ahasuerus imposed a tax on the land and on the coastlands of the sea.
2 And all the acts of his power and might, and the full account of the greatness of Mordecai to which the king advanced him—are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia?
3 For Mordecai the Jew was second in rank to King Ahasuerus, and he was great among the Jews and popular with the multitude of his brothers, for he sought the welfare of his people and spoke up for the well-being of all his descendants.
Translation notes (1)
- Esther 10:3a The title mishneh lammelek, 'second to the king', recalls the elevation of Joseph, whom Pharaoh set over Egypt second only to himself (Genesis 41:40-43); both narratives close with a Jewish exile advanced to vizier in a foreign court. The final clause reads literally 'speaking shalom to all his seed', using shalom, 'peace, well-being'.
