All of Luke KJV

1 He said to his disciples, "It is inevitable that stumbling blocks will come, but woe to the one through whom they come!

2 It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little ones to stumble.

3 Watch yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.

4 And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times turns back to you saying, 'I repent,' you must forgive him."

5 The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!"

6 The Lord said, "If you had faith like a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you.

7 "Would any of you say to your servant who comes in from plowing or tending sheep, 'Come at once and recline at the table'?

8 Would you not rather say to him, 'Prepare something for me to eat, dress yourself for service, and serve me while I eat and drink; and afterward you may eat and drink'?

9 Does he thank the servant because he did what he was commanded?

10 So you also, when you have done everything you were commanded, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.'"

11 On the way to Jerusalem, he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee.

12 As he entered a certain village, ten men with a skin disease met him. They stood at a distance

13 and raised their voices, saying, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!"

14 When he saw them, he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they were going, they were cleansed.

15 One of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice.

16 He fell on his face at Jesus' feet, thanking him. And he was a Samaritan.

17 Jesus answered, "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine?

18 Was no one found to return and give glory to God except this foreigner?"

19 Then he said to him, "Get up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you."

20 Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them, "The kingdom of God is not coming with observable signs.

21 Nor will they say, 'Look, here it is!' or 'There!' For look — the kingdom of God is in your midst."

22 Then he said to the disciples, "The days are coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.

23 And they will say to you, 'Look, there!' or 'Look, here!' Do not go out or chase after them.

24 For just as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day.

25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

26 And just as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be in the days of the Son of Man.

27 They were eating, drinking, marrying, and being given in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.

28 Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot: they were eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building.

29 But on the day Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all.

30 It will be just like that on the day the Son of Man is revealed.

31 On that day, the one who is on the housetop, with his belongings in the house, must not go down to get them. Likewise, the one who is in the field must not turn back.

32 Remember Lot's wife!

33 Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will give it new life.

34 I tell you, on that night there will be two in one bed: one will be taken and the other left.

35 There will be two women grinding together: one will be taken and the other left."

37 They asked him, "Where, Lord?" He said to them, "Where the body is, there the vultures will gather."

Translation notes (8)
  1. Luke 17:10a The Greek word achreioi means 'useless,' 'unprofitable,' or 'unworthy.' This is not an expression of self-deprecation but a recognition that obedience to God does not create any extra merit or claim on Him.
  2. Luke 17:12a The Greek word leproi is traditionally translated as 'lepers,' but biblical 'leprosy' (from the Hebrew tsara'at) covered various skin conditions, not just Hansen's disease. The Trinity Bible Version uses 'skin disease' for accuracy.
  3. Luke 17:19a The Greek word sesōken means 'has saved,' 'healed,' or 'made well.' This word encompasses both physical healing and spiritual salvation. While all ten were healed, only the Samaritan is told that his faith 'saved' him.
  4. Luke 17:21a The Greek phrase entos humōn can mean either 'within you' (referring to an interior or spiritual state) or 'among you' or 'in your midst' (referring to Jesus' present ministry). Both interpretations have support from ancient sources. The Trinity Bible Version uses 'in your midst' because Jesus is addressing Pharisees.
  5. Luke 17:24a Some manuscripts omit the phrase 'in his day.' The longer reading, which includes this phrase, is retained by the critical Greek text (NA28).
  6. Luke 17:33a The Greek word zōogonēsei literally means 'will give birth to it alive' or 'will preserve it alive.' This word is unique to Luke in this context; other Gospels use phrases like 'find it' or 'save it.' The word suggests bringing something to life, not merely preserving it.
  7. Luke 17:35a Some MSS add v.36: 'Two will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.' This is likely a scribal addition from Matt 24:40.
  8. Luke 17:37a The Greek word aetoi can mean either 'eagles' or 'vultures.' Since vultures gather at corpses and eagles do not, 'vultures' fits the context better, meaning the event will be self-evident and need no announcement.
