1 When Israel went out from Egypt,
the house of Jacob from a people of strange language,
2 Judah became his sanctuary,
Israel his dominion.
3 The sea looked and fled;
Jordan turned back.
4 The mountains skipped like rams,
the hills like lambs.
5 What ails you, O sea, that you flee?
O Jordan, that you turn back?
6 O mountains, that you skip like rams?
O hills, like lambs?
7 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
8 who turns the rock into a pool of water,
the flint into a spring of water.

- Psalm 114:1a The participle loʿez, 'speaking unintelligibly', occurs only here in the Hebrew Bible; later Hebrew used the same root for any foreign tongue. The phrase casts Egypt not merely as a foreign land but as a place of alien, incomprehensible speech, sharpening the contrast with Israel's departure into covenant fellowship.
- Psalm 114:8a The verse recalls the wilderness miracles at Rephidim and Meribah, where water flowed from struck rock (Exodus 17:6; Numbers 20:11). Hebrew challamish, 'flint', the hardest of stones, also appears in Deuteronomy 8:15 in the same connection, heightening the wonder: God draws life-giving water from the most unyielding material.
