A Song of Ascents. Of David.
1 O LORD, my heart is not lifted up;
my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvelous for me.
2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child is my soul within me.
3 O Israel, hope in the LORD
from this time forth and forevermore.
Translation notes (1)
- Psalm 131:2a Hebrew gamul (גָּמֻל), 'weaned child', denotes an infant past nursing age, in the ancient world often two or three years old. The image is not of a babe seeking the breast but of a child content simply to rest with its mother, wanting nothing from her. The psalmist's soul has likewise ceased its striving.
