Psalm 93
The full text of Psalm 93 in the Trinity Bible Version — clear modern English, translated from the original Hebrew. Free to read.
1 The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty;
the LORD is robed, he has girded himself with strength.
Indeed, the world is established;
it shall not be moved.
2 Your throne is established from of old;
you are from everlasting.
3 The floods have lifted up, O LORD,
the floods have lifted up their voice;
the floods lift up their crashing waves.
4 Mightier than the thunders of many waters,
mightier than the breakers of the sea—
mighty on high is the LORD.
5 Your testimonies are very sure;
holiness befits your house,
O LORD, forevermore.
Translation notes (1)
- Psalm 93:3a The verse advances by staircase parallelism, each line repeating and extending the last. Hebrew neharot (נְהָרוֹת), 'rivers' or 'floods', evokes the chaotic waters that ancient Near Eastern literature pits against divine kingship, here subordinated to the enthroned LORD. The closing word dokhyam, 'their pounding', occurs nowhere else in the Hebrew Bible.
