Revelation 4
The full text of Revelation 4 in the Trinity Bible Version — clear modern English, translated from the original Greek. Free to read.
1 After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, "Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this."
2 At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me stood a throne in heaven, with someone seated on it.
3 The one seated there had the appearance of jasper and ruby, and a rainbow that looked like an emerald encircled the throne.
4 Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads.
5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder. In front of the throne seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God.
6 In front of the throne was something like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, covered with eyes in front and behind.
7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man's, and the fourth was like a flying eagle.
8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying:
"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,
who was, and who is, and who is to come."
9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor, and thanks to the one who sits on the throne, who lives for ever and ever,
10 the twenty-four elders fall down before the one who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:
11 "You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they existed and were created."
Translation notes (6)
- Revelation 4:1a Thyra eneōgmenē, 'a door standing open' (θύρα ἠνεῳγμένη), is a perfect participle emphasizing a continuing state. The comparison 'like a trumpet' reflects salpiggos (σάλπιγγος); some later manuscripts read the plural salpiggōn, 'trumpets' (σαλπίγγων). Dei genesthai, 'must take place' (δεῖ γενέσθαι), signals divine necessity.
- Revelation 4:3a Greek sardion, a red gemstone rendered here as 'ruby', is elsewhere translated 'carnelian' and takes its name from Sardis. The scene draws on Ezekiel 1:26-28, where the enthroned figure is likewise surrounded by radiance compared to a rainbow, though John adds the emerald hue.
- Revelation 4:5a Greek hepta pneumata tou theou, 'seven spirits of God,' is rendered here as 'seven spirits of God.' Many take this as the fullness of the Holy Spirit (cf. Revelation 1:4; 3:1; 5:6); others as seven angelic spirits who stand before God (cf. Revelation 8:2; Tobit 12:15).
- Revelation 4:6a Greek zōa (ζῷα), 'living creatures', corresponds to the chayyot of Ezekiel 1, where four creatures likewise bear the faces listed in the next verse; the King James tradition's rendering 'beasts' obscures that connection. The eyes covering the creatures recall Ezekiel 1:18, while their song in verse 8 draws on the seraphim of Isaiah 6, merging the two great throne visions of the prophets.
- Revelation 4:8a The threefold hagios (ἅγιος), 'holy', echoes the seraphic cry of Isaiah 6:3 and is known in liturgical tradition as the Trisagion. The Greek pantokratōr, 'ruler of all', renders the divine title behind 'Almighty'. The formula 'who was, and who is, and who is to come' unfolds the divine name of Exodus 3:14 across past, present and future.
- Revelation 4:11a esan kai ektisthesan, 'they existed and were created' (ἦσαν καὶ ἐκτίσθησαν), preserves the Greek imperfect before the aorist. The sequence suggests existence by the divine will preceding the creative act and echoes Genesis 1.
