Jeremiah 45
The full text of Jeremiah 45 in the Trinity Bible Version — clear modern English, translated from the original Hebrew. Free to read.
1 When Baruch son of Neriah wrote on a scroll the words that Jeremiah the prophet dictated in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, Jeremiah said this to Baruch:
2 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch:
3 You said, 'Woe is me! The LORD has added sorrow to my pain; I am worn out with groaning and find no rest.'
4 The LORD said: Say this to him: 'This is what the LORD says: I will overthrow what I have built and uproot what I have planted throughout the whole land.
5 Should you then seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them. For I will bring disaster on all people, declares the LORD, but wherever you go I will let you escape with your life.'"
Translation notes (4)
- Jeremiah 45:1a This event occurred in 605 BC, the same year as the events in chapter 25 and chapter 36. This prophecy is placed at the end of the prose narratives as a personal message to Baruch, even though it is dated earlier.
- Jeremiah 45:3a The Hebrew phrase yāsap YHWH yāgôn ʿal-maḵʾôbî means 'the LORD added grief upon my pain.' This is Baruch's personal lament, which reflects Jeremiah's own confessions, showing that the scribe shares in the prophet's suffering.
- Jeremiah 45:4a The Hebrew text here reverses the four verbs found in Jeremiah 1:10, indicating that what the LORD built He will now overthrow, and what He planted He will now uproot. This shows that even the LORD's own work is being dismantled as part of the judgment.
- Jeremiah 45:5a The Hebrew word gᵉdōlôt means 'great things.' Baruch is being told not to seek greatness, honor, or security during this time of worldwide chaos, but to consider his life itself as the only gift.
